Apple Working on Resolving iPhone XS Applying Excessive Beauty Filter Effect on Selfies Issue

iPhone Xs Max back

Apple is actively working on the iPhone XS applying a gracious amount of smoothing/beauty filter effect in selfie photos. The company reached out to Abdul Dremali who had posted his sample selfies from the iPhone XS and iPhone X for comparison purposes on Twitter.

The issue has received a lot of attention this week, with thousands of new iPhone XS owners complaining about it on Reddit. Popular YouTuber Unbox Therapy has also posted a video about this issue on his channel. iPhone XS owners have termed this excessive smoothening effect as #beautygate.

Apple seems to have specifically made this change on the iPhone XS as the excessive beauty filter effect is not visible on the iPhone X running iOS 12. As we initially speculated, the excessive smoothening effect can be a result of Apple’s post-processing algorithms working to heavily reduce noise which ends up wiping or smoothening out a lot of details from textures.

It is possible that Apple made this post-processing change with the iPhone XS to please selfie-takers in China and Asian markets where consumers tend to take selfie photos with the beauty filter effect applied. And the side effect of catering to the taste of its Chinese customers is that it has ended up annoying its European and US customers who prefer to take selfies without any kind of beauty filter effect.

Now that Apple is working on the issue, we should expect the company to roll out an update soon giving users the option to turn off this beauty filter effect completely.
