Huawei Gave out Free Power Banks to Customers Who Queued up to Buy iPhone XS in Singapore

Image
Ever since Apple unveiled the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max earlier this month, Huawei has taken multiple potshots at the company. Now, in Singapore, Huawei was handing out free power banks to customers who had queued up outside of Apple store in Singapore’s Orchard Road to buy the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Huawei distributed about 200 of its 10,000mAh SuperCharge power bank for free to customers who lined up to buy the iPhone XS. The power bank is priced at S$80 in Singapore. Huawei is obviously taking an indirect potshot at the poor battery life of the iPhones by giving away customers a free power bank. Or the company is just being nice by making the lives of customers who have lined up to buy its competitor’s latest flagship device a wee bit easier and not worry about their existing phone running out of battery. The craze for the new iPhones seems to be particularly high in Singapore where people started lining up outside of Apple’s flagship store in Orchard Road ...

Honor 7X to Get Face Unlock Feature in Q1 2018 Honor, Huawei’s budget-focused sub-brand, stole the spotlight this week with the launch of the affordable, mid-range Honor 7X in a limited-edition red color. In case you haven’t been following our  coverage , the phone packs a 18:9 display with a FHD+ (2160×1080) resolution, dual rear cameras, and a large battery at the competitively low price of $199.99. Alongside the new red color option for the Honor 7X, Honor announced that a face unlock feature will roll out to all variants in the coming weeks. All Honor 7X models and the forthcoming Honor 7X Red will get over-the-air firmware with a facial recognition feature similar to the OnePlus 5T’s Face Unlock . It uses the handset’s front-facing camera to identify your face, and, because the Honor 7X doesn’t have biometric sensors like the iPhone X’s TrueDepth camera, likely works the same way as OnePlus’s implementation — that is to say, t...

Deep Discharge Protection Tool Prevents Battery Shutdown Bug on the Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Note 8 If you’ve browsed the Galaxy Note 8 subreddit lately, you might have noticed a fair number of Samsung Galaxy S8 , Galaxy 8+, and Galaxy Note 8 users complaining about a “deep discharge” issue. We  covered it issue a few days ago,  and it basically comes down to this: Some Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 models fail to boot up after the battery’s been completely discharged. For months, the only recourse was to hammer Samsung’s support helpline for answers, or to make sure the battery level in affected devices didn’t drop close to 0 percent charge. Fortunately, thanks to XDA Recognized Developer dr.ketan , there’s a new fix:  Deep Discharge Protection Tool . It’s an application that shuts devices down as soon as the battery percentage reaches 12 percent, preventing the bug from occurring. If you’re in a situation w...

Nokia 6 (2018) Official with Snapdragon 630 SoC, Bothie Camera Mode and OZO Audio After weeks of leaks and rumors , HMD Global on Friday finally took the wraps off the Nokia 6 (2018) , its latest mid-range smartphone for 2018. It’s the successor to the last year’s Nokia 6 , which was announced in China around the same time a year ago, and it improves upon its predecessor while offering a more competitive package all-around. At first glance, the new Nokia 6 (2018) looks just like the old Nokia 6, but there are a couple of key differences worth noting. For instance, the fingerprint scanner has moved to the back, and the capacitive navigation buttons have been replaced by standard Android software navigation keys. In addition, the stereo speakers found on the original Nokia 6 have been replaced by a single bottom-firing speaker. Source: Nokia   The Nokia 6 (2018) sports a metal unibody design made out of 6000-series aluminum with chamfered edges and rounded corners, which...

Android Security Bulletin for January 2018 is Live, OTA and Factory Images Now Available Just like clockwork, Google releases a new Android Security Bulletin at the beginning of every month, and the January bulletin went live on Tuesday. With it, the search giant published a rundown of exploits that were fixed in this month’s patch and where they originated in the system. All of the vulnerabilities were of the critical or high-security variety, and so this security update is of utmost importance. Luckily, it’s already available in factory images for the Google Pixel and the Nexus 5X / Nexus 6P . Most of the fixes pertain to Android’s media framework. The worst exploit patched in the January Android Security Bulletin let remote attackers make specially crafted files that’d allow remote code execution on your smartphone — if you weren’t careful, a malicious file downloaded from the internet could’ve given full control of your phone to a hacker....

The OnePlus 5T’s Face Unlock Feature is coming to the OnePlus 5 The OnePlus 5T launched with its fingerprint sensor on the back instead of the front, a radical design departure from its predecessors. Oftentimes the biggest advantage of a front-facing fingerprint sensor is the ability to quickly unlock your device when it is still sitting on a table. However, the OnePlus 5T’s bezel-less design approach meant that the company simply couldn’t fit a fingerprint sensor on the front anymore. To combat this, OnePlus introduced their brand new Face Unlock technology which uses the front-facing camera to analyze 100 identifiers of your face. In our experience , it’s blazingly fast and hard to fool. Unfortunately, it remains an exclusive feature on the OnePlus 5T, but not for long. A recent tweet from Carl Pei, one of the co-founders of OnePlus, confirms that the company is bringing Face Unlock to the OnePlus 5 . Due to popular demand, Face Unlock is coming for the One...
