Google Reportedly Paying Apple $9 Billion to Remain Default iOS Search Option

Image
It’s widely known that Google pays Apple a certain amount of money on a semi-regular basis to make sure that it remains the default search engine option on iOS devices. It has been said in the past that iOS devices equal about 50 percent of Google’s search revenue on mobile devices, so it’s imperative to the company to keep that spot on Apple’s devices. Before the end of 2017 it was reported that Apple was getting upwards of $3 billion from Google to secure that spot. But now, more than a year later from that report, it sounds like the company may be paying a lot more to Apple. Business Insider is reporting information shared by analyst Rod Hall that states Google is now paying $9 billion this year to retain its default situation on iOS devices. What’s more, Hall actually thinks that number will increase by next year, and Google could be paying Apple for those default rights to the tune of $12 billion. Hall also echoes those earlier reports, saying ...

Apple May Have Staggered the iPhone XR and iPhone XS Launch on Purpose

Image
While the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR were all unveiled at the same time, the 2018 iPhone lineup had a bit of a staggered launch. The iPhone XS and XS Max officially went up for preorder earlier this month and went on sale last week, but the iPhone XR is still waiting in the wings. The handset just received FCC approval on its path to preorders going live on October 19, so the wait for all the potential future owners out there is shrinking, but it’s certainly still there with just over four weeks to go before the phone actually launches to the public. A new report from The Wall Street Journal has an interesting theory as to why things are this way, and why Apple actually chose to stagger the launch, rather than being forced to by outside issues. According to the report, Apple decided to give the iPhone XS and XS Max (the most expensive iPhone options this year) some room to breathe before it launched the less expensive iPhone option. Apple, essentially, didn’t...

iOS 12.1 Simulator Shows Support for Virtualized 4K External Displays, May Hint at USB-C iPad Pro

Image
Rumor had it that Apple was going to announce brand new iPad Pro models earlier this month, but that ultimately didn’t happen. Which means there’s still room for an event next month! Earlier this week, Apple seeded the first developer beta of iOS 12.1, and it has already shown off quite a bit that Apple probably wasn’t ready to get out there (but should have expected it to). Before we today we saw that Apple is gearing up for landscape support with Face ID, which is not currently supported in current hardware, hinting that a future iPad Pro model will indeed get the feature . Now, developer Steve Troughton-Smith has taken to Twitter to reveal that the iOS 12.1 simulator reveals that the future software will support 4K external displays. As noted in Troughton-Smith’s tweet, that is “not possible on any existing iOS device via the Lightning HDMI adapter”. That seems to suggest that Apple is indeed planning on making an important switch with the 2018 iP...

Code in iOS 12.1 Beta Hints at Upcoming Landscape Support for Face ID in Future iPad Pro Models

Image
Face ID is Apple’s primary focus for biometric security these days, leaving Touch ID in the past and trudging forward wit the face unlock feature. Before the new iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR were unveiled, there was some hope that Apple would add support for landscape Face ID, which would allow owners to use the biometric security measure to unlock their device without requiring the single portrait orientation. But now that the new iPhones are here and we know landscape support isn’t in the mix, eyes are on future devices. Early rumors had suggested the iPad Pro refresh expected at several different times this year would be the devices to add landscape support for Face ID. Now, following the first developer seed of iOS 12.1 on Tuesday , another hint at landscape support has been discovered. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith took to Twitter to post this: Face ID has support for landscape orientation (presumably for iPad only), and iOS 12.1 seems to care a lot more ab...
