Apple Watch Series 4 a ‘Major Design Leap’ like iPhone 5; Features 4 Percent Bigger Battery

The iFixit team has managed to get its hands on the Apple Watch Series 4 and posted a detailed teardown of the wearable. The team calls the leap in design, both internal and external, akin to the iPhone 5: “a device that knows its priorities, and wants to look elegant inside and out.”

The Apple Watch Series 4 comes with a slimmer chassis, a 15 percent bigger edge-to-edge display, 50 percent louder speaker, and a Digital Crown with haptic feedback. Apart from improving its exterior design, Apple has also made it easier to perform in-house repair on the Apple Watch Series 4 once a user is able to get past the display.

The teardown reveals that Apple has managed to fit in a 4 percent bigger battery inside the Apple Watch Series 4 — 1.113 Wh vs 1.07 Wh. This is despite the latest Apple Watch featuring a chassis that’s 6 percent slimmer. There’s also a new thinner Taptic Engine inside the Series 4 Apple Watch, though it has now become longer. It continues to take a lot of internal space though, space which Apple could have used towards a bigger battery.

Apple has also managed to cleverly use the speaker grille in the Apple Watch Series 4 for the barometric sensor instead of giving it its own hole like it had to do with the Apple Watch Series 3.

Overall, the iFixit team gave the Apple Watch Series 4 a repairability score of 6 out of 10, which is the same as the iPhone XS series. The wearable was praised for a relatively straightforward battery replacement procedure once a user gets past the sticky display.

It is impressive to see that Apple has managed to improve the overall repairability aspect of the Apple Watch Series 4 whilst also making it thinner and offer advanced features like ECG.

Apple May Have Staggered the iPhone XR and iPhone XS Launch on Purpose

While the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR were all unveiled at the same time, the 2018 iPhone lineup had a bit of a staggered launch.
