Samsung Privately Showed Off its 7.3″ OLED Foldable Smartphone Prototype at CES

Report: The LG G7 will be Unveiled in March, Launch in April

The LG G6 was announced at Mobile World Congress 2017 as the company’s flagship G series smartphone for 2017, and it eschewed its predecessor’s design in favor of a non-removable battery, glass back, and a tall 5.7-inch 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio display. The G6 wasn’t free from its share of compromises — LG opted for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 system-on-chip instead of the newer Snapdragon 835, for example — but in most respects, reviewers found it to be superior than the G series phones that had come before it.

Now, a report by ET News states that the G6’s successor, the LG G7, will be unveiled in March ahead of an April launch. The publication quoted a “ranking official” from one of South Korea’s top three telecom carriers — SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus — who said that “[the carriers] have agreed with LG to launch the G7 in April”, shortly after the phone enters mass production.

LG usually unveils its G series phones at the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona in February, but this year, the company’s reportedly decided to skip the show as a result of the G7’s delayed launch schedule. ET News spoke to an unnamed industry source who said the G7 might be released as soon as April 20.

ET News noted that the upcoming LG G7 is the first flagship device from the company under LG’s new mobile chief, Hwang Jeong-hwan, who took office in December. The company made the reshuffle after years of sluggish phone sales, it stated.

Not much is known about the specifications of the G7 so far, but rumors point high-end hardware including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 system-on-chip, an OLED display, a design with small bezels, dual cameras, and an iris scanner. We expect to learn more about the G7 (or whatever LG ends up calling it) in the coming weeks.
