Samsung to Launch the Galaxy On7 Prime in India on Amazon in January Samsung used to dominate the Indian smartphone market, but the encroachment of the Chinese smartphone vendors in the country has changed things for the South Korea-based smartphone giant. Xiaomi, for instance, has experienced growth to the point where it’s now tied with Samsung for the top market spot, according to research firm IDC. Samsung, of course, is doing everything it can to protect its lead . In 2015, the company launched the affordable  Galaxy On smartphone series  in India in order to better compete with Chinese original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and Samsung currently sells the Galaxy On5 Pro, the Galaxy On7 Pro, and the Galaxy On Max in India. Now, a report from  IANS  states that the company’s planning to launch a new device in the series, the Galaxy On7 Prime, in the country during the second week of January. The Galaxy On7 Prime will be an Amazon India exclusive , and will come with 3GB/4GB of R

Deep Discharge Protection Tool Prevents Battery Shutdown Bug on the Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Note 8 If you’ve browsed the Galaxy Note 8 subreddit lately, you might have noticed a fair number of Samsung Galaxy S8 , Galaxy 8+, and Galaxy Note 8 users complaining about a “deep discharge” issue. We  covered it issue a few days ago,  and it basically comes down to this: Some Samsung Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 models fail to boot up after the battery’s been completely discharged. For months, the only recourse was to hammer Samsung’s support helpline for answers, or to make sure the battery level in affected devices didn’t drop close to 0 percent charge. Fortunately, thanks to XDA Recognized Developer dr.ketan , there’s a new fix:  Deep Discharge Protection Tool . It’s an application that shuts devices down as soon as the battery percentage reaches 12 percent, preventing the bug from occurring. If you’re in a situation where your Galaxy S8 or Note 8 battery level is

Report: The LG G7 will be Unveiled in March, Launch in April The LG G6 was announced at Mobile World Congress 2017 as the company’s flagship G series smartphone for 2017, and it eschewed its predecessor’s design in favor of a non-removable battery, glass back, and a tall 5.7-inch 18:9 (2:1) aspect ratio display. The G6 wasn’t free from its share of compromises — LG opted for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 821 system-on-chip instead of the newer Snapdragon 835 , for example — but in most respects, reviewers found it to be superior than the G series phones that had come before it. Now, a report by  ET News states that the G6’s successor, the LG G7, will be unveiled in March ahead of an April launch. The publication   quoted a “ranking official” from one of South Korea’s top three telecom carriers — SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus — who said that “[the carriers] have agreed with LG to launch the G7 in April”, shortly after the phone enters mass production. LG usually unveils its G series phones at

HTC Made $2.1 Billion in 2017, the Lowest in 13 Years If you’ve been following HTC’s earnings reports for the past couple of years, you probably know how much trouble the smartphone maker’s been having lately. Fierce competition and underwhelming product launches caused HTC to lose millions of dollars in 2017, and it doesn’t seem like December did the company any better. Its fiscal report for the fourth quarter of 2017 shows that earnings dropped to their lowest level in more than a decade. Some analysts predicted that the Taiwan-based company would turn things around after a restructuring plan and renewed focus on its core product lines. But in the end, HTC raked in just NTD 4.02 billion (about $136 million) in revenue for the month of December — a 29.2 percent decline compared to November 2017, and a dip of 37.25 percent compared to December 2016. In terms of year-over-year performance, HTC didn’t fare much better. It brought in NTD 62.12 billion ($2.1 billion) in revenue, the lowes

Xiaomi Releases Kernel Sources for the Mi Max 2 Xiaomi isn’t exactly known for releasing kernel sources in a timely manner. (There’s still no word on when to expect the  Xiaomi Mi A1’s , for instance.) But the China-based smartphone maker finally followed through with one of its best-sellers: The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 . The Mi Max 2 is a 6.44-inch display behemoth from Xiaomi that packs a massive 5,300mAh battery. It’s got a lot of power, and kernel sources make creating custom ROMs and kernels that take advantage of that power a lot easier. The kernel source’s delayed release didn’t stop developers on the XDA Forums from building custom ROMs for the flagship phone, though. For example, XDA Senior Member  xuefer  brought LineageOS 14.1 to the device, and XDA Senior Member  iscle  brought Ressurection Remix 5.8.5 . Now that the kernel sources are available, we wouldn’t be surprised to see most of the kinks ironed out in the coming weeks. If you have a Xiaomi Mi Max 2, keep an eye out on th

ASUS ZenFone Max Plus coming to the U.S. with a 5.7″ 18:9 display and a 4,130 mAh battery ASUS ‘s ZenFone series comprises devices in low-end, high-end, and mid-range configurations. The ZenFone Max , the ZenFone series’s larger smartphone (in terms of screen size) has larger-than-average batteries, and the newest model isn’t any different. At the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show this week, ASUS announced that the ZenFone Max Plus (M1), an enhanced version of this year’s ZenFone Max, would be coming to the United States. The regular ZenFone Max came with a 5.5-inch display, and the Plus variant bumps it up to 5.7 inches and opts for an 18:9 aspect ratio. Unfortunately, those upgrades come at the cost of battery capacity: the ZenFone Max Plus has a 4,130mAh battery compared to the regular ZenFone Max’s 5,000mAh. Still, Asus claims the Max can run 26 days straight in standby mode. In the camera department, the ZenFone Max Plus has a 16MP front camera with a f/2.0 aperture and dual rear c

[Update: Samsung Denies Adding Dolby Atmos] New Leaked Android Oreo Build for the Snapdragon Samsung Galaxy S8 Adds Dolby Atmos Update 1/8/2018: A member of Samsung’s UK Beta team said that there are “no plans” to add Dolby Atmos support to the Galaxy S8 ‘s Oreo firmware. That might change in the future, but for now, it seems as though Hi-Fi audio fans are out of luck. Samsung has been rolling out  incremental beta updates to Android Oreo for the Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Note 8 smartphone models over the past few weeks, and just today, a Reddit user named /u/Child_Kicker_16 noticed a new official OTA update  is starting to roll out for the Snapdragon Samsung Galaxy S8. Google Camera Mod Updated with Portrait Mode/Lens Blur Toggle and 4K Video Support for Some Devices For those on the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T , you cannot use portrait mode on the front-facing camera, due to lack of RAW camera support. When we first reported on the Google Camera HDR+ port , it had very few options and ran on only a handful of devices. It was unstable in many environments, which led to device-specific variants being released . Since then, it has flourished with a wide range of options for users to avail of and tweak their photos to their liking, providing the option to emulate the processing of certain other Google devices to get the best possible quality from your device. Since then, we’ve seen other advancements take place in the form of the Google Pixel 2- exclusive portrait mode being ported to other devices , meaning anyone can now take a  bokeh style shot from your own phone. Now, a new update to that very same mod includes the addition of 4K video recording

Tweak the Always On Display, Status Bar, and Nav Bar on the Samsung Galaxy S8 with Substratum Theming your Android device is one of the primary reasons why people still root their devices, though recently several rootless theme solutions have cropped up. OEMs have started to implement Sony’s RRO implementation, and Google officially incorporated RRO’s successor, called OMS, into the source code for Android Oreo . Samsung’s smartphones have a theme manager powered by RRO that can be hooked into in order to use custom themes, and that is exactly what the Substratum theme engine with its Sungstratum plugin does. A new theme for the Samsung Galaxy S8 /S8+ allows you to tweak the always on display, status bar, and nav bar. XDA Senior Member tytydraco released a handful of mods for the Samsung Galaxy S8 which require Substratum in order to work. LineageOS 15.1 Brings Android 8.1 to OnePlus 5 Last week, an alpha of LineageOS 15.1 was released by XDA Senior Recognized Developer codeworkx for the OnePlus 5 , bringing Android 8.1 Oreo to the OnePlus 5. It’s a little unstable, and a clear upgrade path from the 14.1 official to the 15.1 build has yet to be established. But a data wipe followed by a clean flash is enough to upgrade from 14.1 to the latest version. codeworkx hinted that he might release a unified package for the 5 and the 5T sometime in the future, once the current alpha build enters stable. Right now, though, not all of LineageOS’s applications and features have made it into the alpha build. A word of caution: If you have set a PIN or password, custom recoveries such as TWRP might not be able to decrypt your phone’s data. We suggest reading the flashing guide carefully before proceeding. Report: MediaTek’s Flagship Helio X SoC Line May Return in the Second Half of 2018 At one time, MediaTek was a rising star. Despite issues with abiding by the GPL for the release of kernel sources, its processors became more and more popular for smartphones made in China. This was because MediaTek’s system-on-chips were cheaper than Qualcomm’s and in the low-end and mid-range price ranges, MediaTek’s chips had competitive performance as well. However, the situation has since changed. The Taiwan-based chip maker has found it increasingly difficult to cope with competition from Qualcomm, and in recent years, its chipsets haven’t been competitive in terms of performance and power efficiency against Qualcomm’s chipsets. As Qualcomm has bounced back from its issues, MediaTek has struggled, and accordingly, its market share of smartphone processors has decreased. The problem came to a head when MediaTek launched its flagship Helio X30 SoC in the market. The company admitted at launch that

The growing list of vendors include  Samsung , Essential , HMD Global , OnePlus , Xiaomi , LG , and Huawei. The company has rolled-out the stable Android Oreo update to the Mate 9 as well as the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus in China, but the international variants of these devices haven’t received the stable updates so far. Now, the international Huawei P10 and P10 Plus are being added to the list of devices which have an Android Oreo beta program. Huawei Mobile Romania has announced that the beta program for both devices (that were launched in February 2017) is now live, and the company is looking for beta testers for the Android Oreo update. Android & iOS App Revenue Increased by 35 Percent in 2017, Totaling $60 Billion Apps on both Android and iOS have taken a more “freemium” model in recent years, giving users the option to use an application or play a game and then pay extra for certain features or in-game items. This has led to a boom in app revenue for app developers, with microtransactions becoming ever more popular in some of the most popular games. Apple recently new disclosure requirements on applications with in-game loot boxes  due to the increasing trend. It is thus unsurprising to hear that overall app revenue has only increased in recent years according to a new report from SensorTower , growing by 35 percent year-on-year to $60 billion in 2017. Firstly, that shows that mobile app freemium models are just not going anywhere. With the industry booming, it is seemingly the most profitable form of monetizing apps for many app developers. With 82% of all app revenue being from games, it’s really not too surp

Google Pixel & Pixel 2 Users Reporting Issues with Swipe Gestures on the Lock Screen The Google Pixel line of devices launched in 2017 and has replaced the Nexus line in receiving Android version upgrades first. With Android 8.1 Oreo releasing recently , it came with a number of improvements and bug fixes over the initial release of Android Oreo . However, it seems to have also brought some new problems when it comes to using the lock screen according to multiple reports from users on Reddit and Google’s Product Forums. Apparently, both generations of Pixel devices running Android 8.1 Oreo appear to be affected. The main complaints relate to the difficulty of using the lock screen, with swipe gestures requiring a full device-wide swipe. This includes swiping away notifications, accessing quick toggles, swipe to unlock the device and even answering phone calls. To answer a phone call, one reportedly has to swipe directly from the bottom of the screen to the top. Swiping away noti

Amazon Alexa coming to Wearables & Headphones with Alexa Mobile Accessory Kit We’ve seen wearables with Amazon  Alexa integration, but they’ve been few and far between. That’s because the software development kit wasn’t built with portable devices in mind, but that’s changing. The Alexa Mobile Accessory Kit is designed for portable, on-the-go gadgets such as wearables, headphones, smartwatches, and fitness devices. It’s the successor to the last year’s Nokia 6 , which was announced in China around the same time a year ago, and it improves upon its predecessor while offering a more competitive package all-around. At first glance, the new Nokia 6 (2018) looks just like the old Nokia 6, but there are a couple of key differences worth noting.
